[Why Your Heart Rate Monitor is Wrong]

Did you know that your typical heart rate monitor measures an "average" rate per minute? In reality, your heart doesn't beat a solid 55 bpm, it beats 50, then 80, then 43 and then 81. Your monitor just calculates the mean.
This is an interesting metric, but heart rate can teach you much, much more.
Most people assume that a healthy heart is beating slowly and steadily. The truth is a healthy heart is agile, highly variable, and changing with every inhale and exhale.
The measurement of your real-time, beat-to-beat variance is called, Heart Rate Variability, and it’s something every yoga student should learn. In a matter of minutes, you can “see” what’s going on in terms of your nervous system and emotional self, and more importantly, you can breath and visualize to change it when needed. #yogabody #yogatalkshow

Repost from @lucasrockwood - In 2006, I started teaching yoga students how to use cheap, foamy toe separators (for doing pedicures) to stretch your feet. My feet are messed up with super high arches and squished up toes, and it really helped me with my balance. Over the years, I tried every possible toe stretching devices... they worked "OK" then we made our own #AwesomeToes. They are the best. I didn't think anyone else (besides me) would buy them, but I was wrong. They're super popular. Seems I'm not the only one who messed up my feet with arch support and stupid air and gel-cushioned shoes. I've got up two shoe sizes so far... still some stretching to do in my left foot in particular, but the cool thing about these is they are designed for "active wear" so you can wear while practicing yoga or inside wide toed shoes (I wear @lemsshoes). I was a competitive springboard diver for 10 years before having kiddos. Once I was finished diving I wanted to join the circus and continue my adrenaline junkie tendencies😅 I fractured my back and had to slow down to heal. Six months later I found out I was pregnant 😱 It was so overwhelming and such a life changing time. I wouldn't trade being a young mom for ANYTHING. I still love to try new things and pretend I'm in the circus sometimes 😂😂😂 I love flipping and being upside down 😜 I've been playing around on my @yogabodyfitness trapeze. It's challenging but so much fun!!!!

I like to start each class by becoming aware of my body, my breathing and everything around me. Being a while in silence helps me quiet my mind and my thoughts. I choose simple and soft movements that allow me to relax the most tense areas of my body. The pranayama I always choose is the ujjayi breathing – its sound helps me to enter quickly into a meditative state. It's been awhile since I've played on one of these guys! I've been sitting hunched over a computer lately, so trying the yoga trapeze out really gave me a good stretch! My lower back really really needed it! I like that this a lot more playful than a traditional aeriel swing, and surprisingly easy to set up. It did take me awhile to find a spot I felt comfortable to practice using it which was an outside exercise pull up bar. Wish I could of tried it out at home with the door frame, but I don't have the space for it there right now. This was a great secluded spot that I left comfortable swinging upside down with my stomach flab swinging around. Need more sessions with this yoga trapeze!

[Yoga Trapeze Teacher Training] 3 years in the making, super excited to have our first batch of Yoga Trapeze Teachers out in the world! Just a week after graduation, 9 grads have already taught their first classes (paid!) and by the end of the month, I'm expecting over half the graduates to be teaching professionally.
If it looks like fun, you're right... but it's also really hard work and non-stop practice (and practice teaching). January's course is completely full with a waiting list, but we still have some space available in April (though it will fill quickly). Oh, and it's in Barcelona. What's not to love?

I began practicing yoga because, while having a golf lesson at my local club, the golf professional said I was stiff and I should go to yoga to help with my golf swing. I practice yoga now because it makes me feel good.
The most rewarding thing for me as a teacher is seeing students progress in their practice. As a teacher trainer, seeing people who fear public speaking at the beginning of the course and learn to teach a 90 minute class with confidence is extremely fulfilling.
The biggest challenge for a yoga teacher is ensuring that everyone in the class has a good experience, from new students to experienced students.
As for the future of yoga, I hope more people discover how good it makes you feel and how good it is for stress relief.
